HSA: Board of Directors 2011-2012

Joy Carroll-Wallis, President
The HSA President supervises all HSA activities including leading HSA Board meetings and ensures that HSA programs have the resources and tools necessary to run smoothly. 

Joy grew up in England and, after gaining her Bachelor of Education from Exeter University, was an elementary school teacher in South London.

Some years later she was one of the first women to be ordained into the priesthood of the Church of England. Joy was a spokesperson for the ordination of women, and served on the Church of England’s General Synod as well as being the advisor to the popular BBC TV comedy series The Vicar of Dibley. After ten years of inner city ministry, she moved to Washington, DC, where she now lives with her husband, Jim Wallis, and their sons, Luke and Jack. Her book,The Woman Behind the Collar was published by The Crossroad Publishing Company.

Over the years Joy has chaired and co chaired five auctions, served on the HSA board as co-chair of fundraising, been a room parent and regularly served on ‘Kiss & Go’ duty.

Yvonne Williams, Executive Vice President
The HSA Executive Vice President assists the President in her leadership role and serves as Acting President if the President is absent.
Diedra Barksdale, Treasurer 

Deidra is the mother of Dominique (a rising 1st grader) and Joelle (starting preK in fall). Deidra was our HSA’s executive vice president in 2010-2011. The previous year, she served as a room parent for Ms. Hammond’s Pre- K class. Deidra has also served as the Community Representative of the Policy Council at Dominique’s day care center where she provided valuable input to the center’s mission, vision and programming. Deidra is a Certified Public Accountant and currently serves as the Chief Financial Officer at a D.C.Public Charter School.

Rebecca Dallek, Secretary
The HSA secretary is responsible for documenting all meetings and ensuring this information is available to the general public. The secretary also provides logistical support to HSA board. 

Rebecca is the mother to Hannah Bender and Ethan Bender, both at Eaton in SY11-12.

Rebecca attended the University of Chicago and received her Masters degree in Computing and Education from Teacher’s College, Columbia University. During her stead at Columbia, Rebecca also taught computer-based instructional design courses to New York City public school teachers and tutored teachers on-site to facilitate the use of computers for teaching and learning.

Rebecca served as the Director of Client Services at SchoolNet Inc. where she supervised all aspects of client relationships for over 25 school districts, including the School District of Philadelphia and Chicago Public Schools. Specific areas of responsibility included product implementation, data collection, change management and development of client relationships. Additionally, she managed a team of implementation Managers, advised senior management on divisional personnel needs and trained new division employees. In her last few years of employment at SchoolNet, Rebecca worked extensively with DC Public Schools to assist with the implementation of a suite of instructional management tools.

VP, Fundraising Vacant
The VP of Fundraising supervises all HSA fundraising programs ensuring all programs have a chairperson, run smoothly and operate within budget.
Michael Bender, VP, Personnel
The VP of Personnel supervises all activities related to hiring, compensating, and evaluating HSA-funded staff members including the full-time art & music teachers and the two enrichment coordinators. 

Mike is the dad of Hannah and Ethan . He works at Hanley Wood, a DC-based media company, where he is the General Counsel and manages the Human Resources Department.

Kiesha Gebreyes, VP, Partnerships and Outreach
The VP of Partnerships and Outreach assists with the Eaton HSA’s external communications needs, and acts as a liaison with various DC governmental officials and offices, other DCPS and area private schools, and local businesses. 
Marsha Walters, VP, Communications
The VP of Communications supervises all activities related to the Eaton website, the Eaton ListServe and the HSA newsletter and ensures the timely communication of HSA activities to all interested parties.Marsha Waters is the mother of three, Maxim, Elle, and Harper. At Eaton, she has been a room parent and a volunteer for Election Cantina. For the last 13 years, Marsha has been a Management Consultant for a large Federal Contractor. 

 

The Room Parent Coordinators serve as the liaison between the John Eaton families to the school and to the Eaton HSA. They also help identify and support the room parents in each classroom.
Deneen Hodges, VP, Room Parent Coordinator 

Deneen has two sons at John Eaton: Jalen and Jacob. Deneen served as a room parent last year for both Ms. Bigelow’s 2nd grade class and Ms. Dullea’s kindergarten class. She has also  served as a co-room  parent for Ms. Goldsten’s  class.  Deneen  works for the nation’s medical research agency, providing advisory services on organizational development.  She holds a dual MS/MBA degree in Healthcare Administration and a BS in Health Sciences.

Elgin Cooper, VP, Room Parent Coordinator 

Elgin Cooper, a proud husband and father of two (Lauren and Alexis), has been an IT Professional  for the past 16 years. He received his B.A. from Michigan State University with a minor in International Finance.  He is from Detroit, Michigan and is a TRUE SPARTAN. GO STATE!
